Type 1 Diabetes in Older People Has Nearly Tripled
by, Kathryn Gentile Alvarez, IDS Director of Exercise Physiology, Teen/Young Adult Specialist
A population-based research study shows that the global prevalence of older people living with type 1 diabetes jumped 180% in the past 30 years.
As the researchers note, these findings likely reflect a growing number of people with type 1 diabetes living to elderly age. They also found that type 1 diabetes mortality significantly dropped by an average of 1% every year since 1990. Plus, complication prevalence dropped.
Technology has come a long way and this is likely a contributing factor. Additionally, we have a lot more resources and information that we can access to help us better manage blood sugars. Sadly, complication rates were highest in countries with a low socio-demographic index. Still, all 21 regions across the globe saw an increase in prevalence for those 65 and older.
My question is; I wonder how tracking was done to see the duration of diabetes.
In my career so far, the amount of people who were diagnosed later in life (and misdiagnosed originally) is shocking. This is a big reason why Breakthrough t1d (formerly JDRF) which stood for Juvenile Research Foundation changed its name.
It’s a very common misconception that type 1 diabetes is only diagnosed in children. We now know that more than half of people are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in adulthood (https://www.ajmc.com/view/many-cases-of-adult-onset-t1d-are-diagnosed-after-age-30-study-finds).
