Last month on Think Like a Pancreas – The Podcast

by Barb Wagstaff, Podcast Manager, IDS Director of Marketing

August was an incredible month for Think Like a Pancreas—The Podcast.

Episode 99 concluded the three-part series Type 1 Diabetes and Pregnancy: A Complete Guide for Women — Preconception to Postpartum. In Type 1 Diabetes and Pregnancy: Labor, Delivery, and the Postpartum Journey, Jennifer Smith and Tavia Vital discussed how to create a labour and delivery plan to share with your medical team, what to expect during a natural delivery or C-section, and, just as importantly, what to expect after delivery.

In Episode 100, the Integrated Diabetes Services Clinicians returned to where it all began and embarked on a 10-part series based on Gary Scheiner’s book Think Like a Pancreas. IDS’s newest clinician Katlyn Agosta sat down with Gary and discussed their diagnosis stories and why these stories are so important as clinicians and people living with type 1 diabetes.

Episode 101 focused on Chapter 2—Why are we doing this? (what’s MEANINGFUL to be gained by managing one’s diabetes?). Dr. Paula Diab and Gary shared that threats of complications 20 years down the road does not motivate “good” behaviour. It is much more important to focus on how improved management today makes you feel better now.

Episode 102 focused on Think Like a Pancreas’ Chapter 3: The lowdown on insulin (what it is, how it works, options available). Tavia Vital talked with Gary about how insulin actually works in the body, the difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes, and why some people can have features of both at once. They also explained the purpose of basal insulin versus bolus insulin, why “waking up with a good number” doesn’t necessarily mean your basal dose is right, and how the major factors — food, stress hormones, physical activity, and insulin — work together to raise or lower blood sugar.

Katlyn Agosta talked with Gary on Episode 103 about The 3 Keys to Diabetes Management. Discover what you need in your diabetes toolbox to successfully manage your diabetes. Understand the skills that will serve you well over the years, and hear just how important attitude is in maintaining your over all health.

In Episode 104, Jennifer Smith joined Gary Scheiner to break down the difference between basal and bolus insulin. They shared why they are important and how they each work. Listen to learn more fundamental insights from chapter 5 of Think Like a Pancreas.

Episode 105 saw Jennifer and Gary Laying the Foundation (fine-tuning basal insulin). Together, they explored evaluating basal insulin using fasting blood sugar patterns, the difference between testing basal on injections versus insulin pumps, and why most people’s basal needs make up 40–50% of their total daily insulin and much more.
