By Dr Paula Diab, IDS Diabetologist & Weight Management Specialist
Have you ever tried a diet, lost weight, and then found yourself gaining it back again?
Many people experience this cycle of losing and regaining weight, often feeling frustrated when their efforts don’t lead to lasting results. This pattern, known as “yo-yo dieting” or weight cycling, is common—but research is showing that it may have serious health consequences, especially for people with type 1 diabetes.
A new study published in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism1 highlights the risks of weight cycling, particularly its impact on kidney health. Researchers found that people with type 1 diabetes who frequently lost and regained weight were more likely to experience a decline in kidney function, develop early-stage kidney disease, or see their kidney health worsen at a faster rate. These risks were significant even when considering other common factors affecting kidney health. The study reinforces the importance of sustainable weight loss—not just losing weight, but keeping it off—to protect overall health in the long run.
At Integrated Diabetes Services, we understand how challenging it can be to maintain weight loss, which is why Dr Paula Diab approaches weight management for people with diabetes in a holistic and practical manner.
The focus is not on losing weight quickly but rather in a more sustainable and healthy way that will not compromise the benefits of good diabetes management. In addition, to her medical experience and expertise, we are also able to offer lifestyle and social support to those on the program reducing the risks associated with weight cycling. If you’re looking for lasting results and better health, contact Integrated Diabetes Services today to learn more about how we can support your journey.
