Quick Fix? – New Study on Use of Ultra-Rapid Insulin in Insulin Pumps
By Amber Jackson, RN, DCES – IDS Intern
Raise your hand if you are sick and tired of every meal causing you to ride a blood glucose roller coaster?!
Even for those of you who are awesome enough to dose before they start eating, there can still be imbalanced insulin needs. Sadly, I am not included in this group, as I am always last-minute dosing or even catch-up dosing – causing an unnecessary spike and with an extended hyperglycemia or rapid descent to an unhappy me.
BUT listen up!
A new study, Safety and Effectiveness of MiniMed™ 780G Advanced Hybrid Closed-Loop Use with Ultrarapid Insulin Lispro-AABC in Pediatric and Adult Type 1 Diabetes, published in Diabetes Technology & Therapeutics, showed the potential for better control…
They took 110 adults aged 18 to 80 years and 101 children and adolescents aged 7 to 17 years with type 1 diabetes who took at least 8 U of insulin daily, had a baseline HbA1c of less than 10%, and used an insulin pump for at least 6 months.
After a 2-week run-in period, all participants used ultra-rapid insulin Lyumjev with automated insulin delivery for 3 months.
Key Findings
Time in range increased from 51.2% in the run-in period to 68.6% in the trial’s final 6 weeks for children, and from 67% to 77.6% for adults.
Both groups also had a decline in time above range, whereas time below range did not change.

Halis Kaan Akturk, MD, states that these findings support ultra-rapid insulin lispro-aabc as a reasonable insulin option for people using an insulin pump, particularly for those who struggle with premeal blousing or postprandial hyperglycemia – me!
He later emphasizes that insulin choice matters, but system optimization and user engagement remain essential.
The takeaway
The study showed meaningful improvements in CGM outcomes, particularly time in range and time in tight range, without an increase in severe hypoglycemia or DKA.
