What is Diabetes Self-Management Education?

An article titled “National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education” written in Diabetes Care, stated “Diabetes self-management education (DSME) is the ongoing process of facilitating the knowledge, skill, and ability necessary for diabetes self-care. This process incorporates the needs, goals, and life experiences of the person with diabetes and is guided by evidence-based standards. The overall objectives of DSME are to support informed decision-making, self-care behaviors, problem-solving and active collaboration with the health care team and to improve clinical outcomes, health status, and quality of life.”

We offer two different group-class options:

  1. surviving Thriving with Type 2 Diabetes
This course is designed for those with a diagnosis of pre-diabetes or type 2 diabetes. Whether you were diagnosed days or decades ago- you will benefit from this program. I teach all of these course classes and have over 16 years of experience teaching not only diabetes self-management, but also specializing in the group setting. Course content includes: pathophysiology of diabetes, blood sugar monitoring (which includes a free blood sugar meter & tutorial), meal planning, carbohydrate counting, nutrition label reading, types of sweeteners, stress management, goal setting, improving fitness, emotional support and much more. Most insurance plans (Medicare, Medicaid and most commercial plans) cover 10 hours of diabetes education. We split those 10 hours into four sessions, with each class being about 2.5 hours in length.
  2. Insulin University
This course is for anyone with type 1 or type 2 on intensive insulin management. Whether you’re on MDI or pump therapy, this class is designed to empower you to take control of your diabetes management. All classes are taught by PWD and IDS clinician, Kathryn Gentile.
Course content includes, but is not limited to: basal/bolus insulin, blood sugar monitoring schedule & CGM, basic insulin meal coverage, blood glucose factors, hypoglycemia signs/symptoms prevention & treatment, DKA signs/symptoms prevention & treatment, and technology options.

Not only are you getting evidence-based education from a curriculum accredited by the American Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists, but you’re also getting the benefit of being surrounded by classmates/peers that offer a unique support system that is hard to find elsewhere.

Please reach out to me if you’re interested in one of our class options for yourself or someone you know. One of the most recurring comments I hear from participants of the classes is “I wish I took these classes years ago, when I was first diagnosed!” Don’t wait! Diabetes is what we do and we are here for you!
