IDS Monthly Survey: September 2022
LAST MONTH’S SURVEY QUESTION:
In last month’s edition of Diabetes Bites, we asked: What is your acceptable range for overall glucose levels? Here’s how you responded:
40% 70-180 mg/dl (3.9-10 mmol/l)
31% 70-150 mg/dl (3.9-8.3 mmol/l)
16% 80-200 mg/dl (4.4-11.1 mmol/l)
4% 60-140 mg/dl (3.3-7.8 mmol/l)
9% Something completely different
Interesting that more than half of those responding do NOT use the standard 70-180 (3.9-10) range recommended by the American Diabetes Association. And that’s great! Diabetes treatments should be customized to the individual, and that includes glucose targets.
THIS MONTH’S NEW SURVEY QUESTION:
Any info on issues with abdominal insulin absorption after an abdominoplasty, popularly referred to as a tummy tuck? I’ve asked 2 endos in my part of the country, and they had no idea. Thanks.
The plastic surgeons I’ve spoken to both shared data that insulin absorption is not impeded following abdominoplasty, or liposuction. This is likely because the upper layer of fat tissue is left relatively undisturbed. However post surgery it is recommended to avoid injection or infusion into effected areas until they are healed to avoid added inflammation or infection risks. One’s individual needs would depend on their individual physiology, insulin needs and other risk factors so consult your doctor. But insulin use alone should not be a limiting factor for these procedures.
