LAST MONTH’S SURVEY QUESTION:
In last month’s edition of Diabetes Bites, we asked what food type you wish could be a FREE FOOD (with no effect on blood sugar levels).
Here’s how you responded:
- 13%: Chocolate
- 0%: Sugar-sweetened beverages
- 7%: Salty snacks
- 33%: Cakes & Pastries
- 47%: Bread
Wow! We never expected bread to take the cake. Interestingly, most breads (especially French bread) are among the highest glycemic-index foods on the planet. Not only does bread contain a decent amount of carboydrate, but it raises the blood sugar really, really fast.

Actually, I’ve never had enough insulin at once to worry about expiration dates! I get 3 months worth at a time, and in 3-4 months, it’s all gone.
low volume insulin users often end up using an odd amount that goes just over one vial, and children often use less than one vial, per month. So they end up with a backstock over time. But I’m like you Beth, no extra insulin in my house!
