IDS Monthly Survey: May 2023
LAST MONTH’S SURVEY QUESTION:
In last month’s edition of Diabetes Bites, we asked which, if any, mealtime insulin you PREFER – assuming price is no obstacle.
Here’s how you responded:
28% Humalog
23% Novolog (Novorapid)
21% Lyumjev
17% Afrezza
6% Fiasp
5% Apidra
I’d like to know how long I can use vials of Novolog insulin that have been stored in my refrigerator in unopened box es since picking up the prescription from the pharmacy. I’m currently using a vial from 01/19/2020.
Expired insulin does not “GO bad” in that it does not become harmful after expiration, but it does slowly lose efficacy. So it may not work as well as it should. It would not be ideal to use, but if it’s a choice between that or nothing, use expired insulin. Just be prepared to need more to get the job done.
I appreciate Gary’s vulnerability and openness with the daily issues involving type 1. Having lived with this for over 62 years, I am encouraged when I hear someone who has become very successful as a professional diabetes care and education specialist share his reality.
Thank you so so much for all you do to make life a bit more “doable”.

health care for all insulin for everyone who needs it! Does it make sense that the US has the most expensive medications in the world? Is it a radical concept to believe that life saving health care is a human right?
