IDS Monthly Survey: August 2024
LAST MONTH’S SURVEY QUESTION:
In last month’s edition of Diabetes Bites, we asked for your approach to protecting insulin from the summer heat.
Here are your cool(ing) ideas:
6% I avoid spending a lot of time outside
38% I keep my insulin (vial, pen, pump) out of direct sunlight and don’t leave it in a car
31% I use a thermal pouch (such as “Frio”) when going outdoors
14% I keep my insulin in a cooler with ice when away from home
11% I just don’t worry about it. If it spoils, it spoils.
Insulin is remarkably durable, but it can start to lose effectiveness when exposed to temperatures above 90? Fahrenheit (32? Celsius) for more than an hour or two. The higher the temperature and the longer the exposure, the more the insulin breaks down. If you must expose your insulin (including insulin in a pen, pump and pump tubing) to prolonged high temps, discard it and use fresh stuff.
We'll let you know what our IDS subscribers think in next month's Diabetes Bites newsletter...
