IDS Monthly Survey: April 2025
LAST MONTH’S SURVEY QUESTION:
In last month’s edition of Diabetes Bites, we asked you to share how you tend to deal with low blood sugar episodes.
Here’s how you responded:
4% If anything, I under-treat them.
22% I’m pretty good about using just the right amount of carbs.
61% I tend to over-treat a little bit.
13% If will eat everything and anything that is edible and within reach. (and maybe some things that are not considered edible)
Interesting to note that nearly 75% of respondents admit to routinely over-treating their lows.
Of course, this can lead to highs a few hours later, as well as unwanted weight gain. Best to use a very-rapid-acting form of carbohydrate to treat lows, and check with a fingerstick (CGM tends to “stick” in a low range incorrectly) in 10-15 minutes before eating again. And if you use an automated insulin delivery system, you should cut back on your usual hypo treatment since basal reductions will also contribute to a rise.
Just sayin’.
