If Something Could Help with Adapting to a New Diet Would You Give it a Try?
People often want to try a new diet for many reasons including weight loss and health benefits but have a hard time sticking to it. While a lot of diets are unsustainable, it is important to eat foods with a good nutritional profile and avoid highly processed foods. If you are seeking a healthier diet, you might have some foods that are really hard for you to give up because of the addictive ingredients. Additionally, it can be challenging to cut back on the portion sizes that you’re used to.
If something could help with adapting to a new diet would you give it a try?
A new study from the Center for Weight, Eating, and Lifestyle Science at Drexel University found that exercise may actually make it easier to adapt to a new, healthier diet because it helps to prevent overeating. The study specifically looked at calorie-restricted diets targeting weight loss and suggested that exercise may be an aid to adherence. Specifically, the research found that engaging in physical activity for an hour cut odds of overeating in the following hours in half, from 12% to 5% and longer workouts resulted in further decreases.
Furthermore, the results of the study also suggest that lighter physical activity had a stronger correlation to decreased overeating than more vigorous activity(further research would be needed to confirm this finding). This could be the case because if we do a more vigorous workout, our body would want more calories to refuel. I know I personally feel extra hungry after an intense workout.
Knowing that working out can help prevent overeating could be an extra motivation to increase your physical activity. And even if it doesn’t help you with overeating, you would still be benefiting your health. So why not give it a try? Do your own experiment and see if it works for you!
