For decades, most type 1 diabetes programs and services have focused on children, teens, and young adults, yet many people living with type 1 diabetes (T1D) are now in their 40s, 50s, 60s, and beyond – adults living with type 1 diabetes deserve their own community!

In-Person Peer Support Matters
Virtual groups can be helpful, but they cannot replace the human connection and social time that come from meeting face to face. For many adults living with T1D, sitting in the same room, sharing stories and laughter with others who understand helps cut through deep feelings of isolation.
The meetups are not held in a clinic and there are no lectures. They are casual, social gatherings where conversations about type 1 diabetes happen naturally and people share their lived experience.
Attendees ask each other how to navigate insurance battles. They compare pumps, sensors and other diabetes technology. They talk about relationships, exercise, sleep, caregiving and the everyday decisions that never show up in a brochure. Most of all, they can say, “These are my people. They get it.”
Interest in Grownup T1Ds has grown quickly. Adults and clinicians around the country are asking for meetups and chapters in their own communities. To respond to this need, Grownup T1Ds is expanding nationally and also needs more help behind the scenes.
How You Can Get Involved
To keep costs low and continue offering free events, Grownup T1Ds is looking for people willing to share their skills behind the scenes. Volunteer support is especially needed in areas such as:
- Media and social media
- Grant writing and basic fundraising research
- Accounting and bookkeeping
- Email newsletters (writing, editing or sending)
- Helping lead local meetups and chapters for adults living with T1D
All volunteers, including chapter leaders, receive guidance and support from the organization.
