A new study shows promise for adults with type 1 diabetes and chronic kidney disease (CKD).
Urine protein levels, a sign of kidney problems, went down 34% with finerenone compared to 12% with placebo.
Why it matters:
- Albuminuria is a reliable early warning sign of kidney problems and cardiovascular risk.
- Finerenone’s reduction in albuminuria is linked to long-term kidney protection, as shown in previous type 2 diabetes studies.
- The drug was well tolerated, with mostly mild or moderate side effects.
About the Trial (FINE-ONE)
- Who participated: 242 adults with type 1 diabetes and chronic kidney disease
- What they took: Finerenone (10–20 mg) or a placebo
- How long: 6 months
- What was measured: Levels of protein in the urine (UACR), a sign of kidney health
Expert take:
FINE-ONE is the first worldwide study testing finerenone in adults with type 1 diabetes and kidney disease,” said Hiddo Heerspink, PhD. “The results show that finerenone may help lower the risk of kidney failure and heart problems in these patients.
Bottom line:
Finerenone could help protect your kidneys and heart, while being just as safe as standard treatments. A safer path to healthier kidneys and heart.
