Downsizing with Diabetes: How to Start Your Weight Loss Journey the Right Way
Over the next few months, I hope to highlight different aspects of weight management with diabetes. At IDS, we offer a specific program called “Downsizing with Diabetes” that offers a combination of individual and group sessions as well as regular support and feedback for people who would like to manage their weight more effectively.
This month’s focus will be on starting your weight loss journey and understanding the role of nutrition but please look on our social media channels for regular updates and information as well.

Embarking on a weight loss journey with diabetes requires careful planning, realistic goal-setting, and a commitment to making sustainable lifestyle changes.
I’m a big planner! I love lists and set reminders for various tasks often! In fact, I have no idea how I survived before Google Calendar. So, please forgive me if I get a bit over-excited about planning!
Setting realistic and achievable goals is key to staying motivated and tracking progress.
Start by defining specific, measurable goals that align with your overall health objectives. Whether it’s losing a certain amount of weight, being able to partake in some physical activity or just adopting healthier habits. Try to break down your goals into smaller, manageable steps so you can celebrate your achievements along the way.
Part of this goal setting includes a healthy diet and exercise routine. Nutrition obviously plays a crucial role in managing both weight and diabetes.
Aim to incorporate a balanced mix of carbohydrates, protein, and healthy fats into your meals to help regulate blood sugar levels and support weight loss efforts. Focus on whole, unprocessed foods such as fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains, and limit foods high in added sugars and unhealthy fats.
Mindful meal planning is essential to get ahead in understanding nutrition and supporting your weight loss journey.
Start your day with a nutritious breakfast to kick-start your metabolism and stabilize blood sugar levels. Plan your meals and snacks ahead of time to ensure you have healthy options readily available and avoid impulsive food choices. Focus on filling your plate with a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains to provide essential nutrients and keep you feeling satisfied.
Possibly our greatest enemy is portion sizes.
Try to pay attention to portion sizes to avoid overeating and manage your calorie intake. Use measuring cups, spoons, or visual cues to help you gauge appropriate portion sizes for different food groups. Practice mindful eating by slowing down, savoring each bite, and tuning into your body’s hunger and fullness cues to prevent mindless snacking and unnecessary calorie consumption.
Another wise choice is to opt for whole, minimally processed foods whenever possible to maximize nutritional value and minimize added sugars, unhealthy fats, and artificial ingredients.
Choose complex carbohydrates such as quinoa, brown rice, and sweet potatoes over refined grains and sugary snacks. Incorporate lean proteins like chicken, fish, tofu, and legumes to support muscle growth and repair.
Regular physical activity is also essential for managing diabetes and promoting weight loss.
Choose activities that you enjoy and can incorporate into your daily routine, whether it’s walking, cycling, swimming, or yoga. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week, and don’t forget to include strength training exercises to build muscle and boost metabolism as well as flexibility exercises to protect your joints. But more about that in the next newsletter!
By prioritizing mindful meal planning, practicing portion control, and choosing nutrient-dense foods, you can optimize your nutrition to support weight loss and diabetes management.
