LAST MONTH We Asked:
In last month’s edition of Diabetes Bites, we asked you to name 4 factors that influence the amount of carb needed to properly treat a low.

CONGRATS: to Emily Prigdovich of Ohio, USA, for being the first person with a correct answer!
ANSWER:
- insulin-on-board (more carb needed with more IOB)
- level of physical activity (more activity = more carb needed)
- recent food consumed (less carb needed if food is still digesting)
- the rate of decline (faster drop means more carb needed)
Other factors include:
- Body size (the bigger you are, the more carb you need)
- How low the blood sugar is (the lower you are, the more carb you need)
- Use of an AID system (less carb is needed with systems that lower basal insulin automatically)
Needless to say, the “rule of 15” (have 15g, wait 15 minutes) does not usually apply. Customization is important for ensuring an appropriate recovery from hypogycemia.
