CONGRATS: Matt W., parent of a T1 in Bethlehem, PA, USA, for being the first person with the correct answer!
=>Last month: We asked when the relationship between glucose-bound red blood cells (glycosylated hemoglobin) and average blood sugar was first discovered.
ANSWER: 1968
That’s 55 years ago! The discovery was made by Dr. Samuel Rahbar of the University of Tehran. Of course, this led to the use of the HbA1c as the standard for assessing overall glucose management for several decades.
Today, with widespread use of CGM, HbA1c plays less of a role since we can obtain the average glucose directly from the CGM and also assess the quality of glucose management by analyzing time spent above, below and within one’s target range.
THIS MONTH’S NEW TRIVIA QUESTION:
Glucose levels are measured differently in different parts of the world.
For example, a purely metric approach (mg/dl) is used in the US, while Canada and most of Europe express blood sugar in millimoles per liter (mmol/l).
QUESTION: How does one convert mmol/l to mg/dl?
