An Energizing Workout Naturally Helps Curb Hunger
by Ryanne Paul, IDS Intern

Ghrelin is a hormone in the body that stimulates hunger and appetite.
Researchers in the past have proven that individuals with higher levels of ghrelin have a more challenging time losing weight. Additionally, it was reported that intensive exercises such as running, cycling, swimming, and jumping rope may lower ghrelin levels. The researchers focused on the two types of ghrelin: acylated (AG) and deacylated (DAG). Researchers believed AG was found to be responsible for prompting insulin resistance and energy balance regulation. DAG was originally thought to be the inactive form of ghrelin. Researchers now believe DAG may be used to influence glucose metabolism and the movement of food through the gastric system.
Now, researchers from the University of Virginia found that vigorous exercises suppress ghrelin release more than moderate exercises, particularly in women.
They found that female participants had higher levels of total ghrelin and DAG form than male participants. Scientists found that only female participants had reduced AG levels after vigorous exercise. Both genders showed reduced DAG ghrelin levels after vigorous exercise when compared to moderate exercise.
So… if you want to maximize the benefits of your workouts, particularly when it comes to weight loss, consider taking the intensity up a notch. But don’t overdo it… you should still be able to speak in short sentences without too much difficulty while you exercise.
