Reflections on 2024 and My Top 6 Tips for Open-Source Diabetes Management
Since we, at IDS work with many individuals who embrace the open-source approach (also known as DIY) for diabetes management, I wanted to share some of my top tips to help you navigate and succeed in this space.
Much of what I know, I’ve learned from resources like LoopDocs, Loop and Learn, and YouTube videos (particularly the Loop and Learn series).
The key is to dive in—if reading isn’t your preferred learning style, start with videos. Repetition is also key; I became comfortable with builds by doing them repeatedly.
If you haven’t made the switch to browser builds, now’s the time. They’re more versatile, don’t require specific computers or software, and make it easier to set up additional or backup phones connected to your Apple ID. If you use multiple apps, consider organizing them as an organization for better management.
Most people benefit from at least one, if not several customizations for Loop. Take the time to explore these options—they can make a significant difference in your experience and outcomes.
The Loop and Learn newsletter is a must-have resource.
It’s well-organized and keeps you informed about everything from new agreements to troubleshooting tips. Staying updated helps you avoid unexpected errors and ensures you’re using open-source tools effectively.
The app Trio is gaining in popularity (as it should) and can deliver incredible blood sugar outcomes with minimal intervention, but only if you take the time to understand and fine-tune your preferences. The more you know, the better your outcomes will be.
No matter how many backups you have, it’s essential to know how to administer long-acting insulin and manage your care without technology. I’ve seen too many people panic during tech failures, which only adds unnecessary stress. Preparation is key to minimizing stress when things don’t go as planned.
