Good News: States Push to Simplify Prior Authorization for Life-Saving Meds and Insulin Approvals!
by IDS Emotional Health Counselor, Anna Sabino

We all cringe when we hear the phrase “prior auth” or “requires physician prior authorization” in order to fast-track us receiving our life-saving meds.
This happened to me about a year ago. I am not a crier and after days of listening to hold music and being transferred and communicating with what felt like incompetent individuals over and over again I would, weeks later get insulin and devices approved just because it had been a year. Oooy.
Good news for some of you!
Some states (only 10 so far and more on the way, fingers crossed) are recognizing the drawn-out process of approval and trying to make it easier for us like enforcing strict response time for insurers and for people with chronic illness unless there is an illness status change (likely nope) a new PA isn’t required. Hooray!
Vermont, Minnesota, Wyoming, Colorado, Illinois, Mississippi, Maine, Maryland, Oklahoma, and Virginia have all passed prior authorization legislation this year, with additional states, including Massachusetts, considering more reform bills before the end of 2024.
